Helly Hansen’s Guide on How to Dress for Winter

hh_logoTo fully enjoy your day up on the mountain, you‘re going to want to make sure that you’re dressing properly for the conditions. After all a great day at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort starts with making sure you stay warm, dry and comfortable all day. This may seem easy but many snowsports enthusiasts forget a few key rules – so we’d like to take a few minutes to remind you.

No matter the conditions on the hill, you’re going to want to use a high quality performance baselayer. This crucial piece of gear will transport moisture away from the body, before it starts stealing your precious body heat and cooling you down. Remember, if you want to stay warm, you need to stay dry.

Baselayer
Which type of baselayer you choose will depend on your activity level and how cold it is on the mountain. For example, skiers who hike for their turns tend to produce a lot heat and sweat; so their optimal baselayer should be light and focus primarily on moisture transfer. A great choice is Helly Hansen’s HH Dry Stripe Crew.

For those who primarily ride the lift line, you’ll need a baselayer that can move moisture while you’re working hard on the way down but also keep you warm for the chairlift up. A fantastic choice here is Helly Hansen’s HH Warm Ice Crew. W-Ice-CrewWarm Ice Crew
Midlayer
Your midlayer is the second crucial component in your layering system; as it has two functions: it provides insulation while simultaneously moving moisture from your baselayer and away from your body. There are many different types of midlayers, from fleece to synthetic insulators. The choice really depends on how much warmth you need. A great option if you’re looking for fleece is the Helly Hansen Velocity Fleece.

If you’re looking for the absolute best insulator money can buy, then go with our favourite – the Odin Isolator. W-Odin-IsolatorOdin Isolator Jacket
If you experience changes in your body temperate, from too hot to too cold and back again, check out the H2 Flow Midlayer Jacket which puts you in control your body’s temperature. Click here to check out the H2 Flow Jacket H2_Flow_JacketH2 Flow Jacket
Outerwear
Completing your 3-layer system is your outerwear. The jacket and pant play a crucial role as your barrier against the elements, keeping snow, wind and rain out while still allowing your body to breathe. This is no easy task and making sure you have a high performing waterproof/breathable jacket with fully taped seams will ensure a much happier (and drier) day on the mountain. For those who are extremely active and tend to run warm or for those visiting our mountain in the Spring, a shell jacket and pant would be the best option as you won’t need extra warmth. The Helly Hansen Verglas Jacket is a great choice for performance shells.

However, since it does get a bit cold on our mountains, most of our guests will benefit from using an insulated outerwear setup, such as the Helly Hansen Alpha Jacket. Alpha-JacketAlpha Jacket
