The Canadian Rockies Celebrity You Need to Meet

by Sophia Gould / Wednesday, 03 June 2026 / Published in Summer, Uncategorized

A chairlift ride, mountain views, and a face-to-face encounter with a grizzly bear. That’s just your average summer day here at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort!

Sitting high above Golden, British Columbia, the Kicking Horse GrizzlyBear Refuge is home to Boo, arguably British Columbia’s most famous grizzly bear and one of the most famous in Canada. While visitors come for the stunning alpine scenery, exhilarating mountain biking, and hiking trails, many leave talking about one thing: their unforgettable encounter with Boo. In fact, meeting Boo will likely be the highlight of your multi-generational, epic family summer adventure!

What makes a visit so special is that Boo isn’t pacing around a small enclosure. His 20-acre habitat is filled with natural terrain where he can forage, explore, play, and behave much like a wild grizzly. On any given day, you might spot him digging for snacks, wandering through the forested slopes, or bathing in one of his four cool pools.

Boo’s Beginnings

Boo’s story began near Quesnel, BC in 2002 when he and his brother, Cari, were orphaned after their mother was killed by a poacher. Named after the Cariboo mountain region in which they were born, the cubs were rescued and brought to Kicking Horse, where a purpose-built 20-acre mountainside refuge was created to give them a safe home. Tragically, Cari passed away during his first winter dormancy, leaving Boo as the refuge’s sole resident.

In 2006, Boo made national headlines after escaping the refuge during mating season in search of a female grizzly. True to form, he eventually returned home on his own, proving that even grizzly bears appreciate a good home base!

Start Your Visit at the Interpretive Centre

Before you even spot Boo, take some time to explore the Interpretive Centre located at the entrance to the Grizzly Bear Refuge. This interactive space is packed with information about grizzly bears, wildlife conservation, and the different bear species found around the world.

Visitors can compare bear skulls and tracks, learn how to identify grizzly and black bears, discover what bears eat, and gain a deeper understanding of the important role bears play in healthy ecosystems. It’s a fun and educational stop for both kids and adults, helping visitors appreciate just how remarkable these animals truly are.

Ranger Assist Program

If you want an even closer look, the Ranger Assist Program offers a behind-the-scenes experience with the refuge team. Limited to just five participants per tour, this exclusive program provides a unique opportunity to learn how Boo’s habitat is managed and how the team supports his wellbeing throughout the year. It is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in the Rockies.

The refuge’s mission goes beyond simply showcasing a bear. Through daily interpretive tours, visitors learn about grizzly behaviour, habitat conservation, and the challenges bears face in today’s changing landscape. The knowledgeable guides bring Boo’s story to life while helping guests gain a deeper understanding of one of Canada’s most iconic wildlife species.
