Our Avalanche Skills Training (AST) 1 course, delivered by the Mountain Safety team at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, is an excellent resource for those interested in winter backcountry recreation who haven’t been formally trained about avalanche hazards.
The AST course focuses on avalanche hazard recognition and avoidance to help participants with their own decision making in the field. It is also a prerequisite for the CAA level 1 course.
This 2 day course covers avalanche terrain recognition and avoidance, companion rescue, and how to use the Avaluator, a decision support tool. All courses are taught by professional members of the Canadian Avalanche Association and have a maximum instructor to student ratio of 1:8.
There is a minimum of 3 students required for each course. Additional courses may be available upon request.
