TREES ARE FOR GLADES AT RESORTS OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES
Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR), Canada’s largest private ski resort operator, has committed to doing more to lessen their environmental footprint.
For this fall season leading up to winter, RCR, which includes Fernie Alpine Resort, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and Kimberley Alpine Resort in British Columbia, will not be printing a brochure for the very first time. Instead of printing brochures to hand out at trade shows, the company will focus on re-directing people to their online brochure, while re-investing funds into planting trees with a non-profit organization, Trees for the Future. For every email sign-up, RCR has committed to planting one tree.
The campaign is called Trees are for Glades.
All information like trail maps, vacation packages and town information can be easily found through their websites. By asking for email signups, it helps to teach consumers to use more sustainable methods to gather information. The company is in hopes that it sheds light on the amount of unnecessary paper that is consumed on a daily basis.
Over 75,000 pieces of paper will be saved during this campaign, and RCR’s goal is to plant 10,000 trees.
Other environmental commitments: RCR has recently implemented an online waiver system for season passes, has worked to conserve water and energy and implemented recycling programs.
More Information on Trees are for Glades can be found here: www.treesareforglades.com.

We like white on green here at Resorts of the Canadian Rockies; lots and lots of snow on our mountains and all over the trees on those mountains too. Because if you’ve never come rocketing through the glades, ripping up and down the natural moguls with powder hitting you in your grinning face until you blast back onto the trail, you really haven’t lived. And we kind of want to keep that around for a while, for future skiers and riders, for our kids, and for our kids’ kids too.
That’s why we decided to take a stand and be the first ski resort company to refuse printing a brochure this year, to do what we can to lessen our environmental footprint. On top of that, we’ll plant a whole tree for every email sign-up to our online newsletter. We hope this helps reiterate to consumers everywhere, that taking paper maybe isn’t the answer any more, especially if you can find that information online anyways.
So, help do your part and keep the Trees for Glades! Sign your email up on our Trees for Glades website and read our full story (plus enter our contest for the chance to win a spring event ski trip for you and 3 friends)!
Success So Far:
- 75,000 pieces of paper saved by this initiative alone
- So far: 3000+ trees planted – thanks to you!

Golden, BC – Boo is trying to steal jobs, this time going after The Groundhog and making his own winter predictions. Although the groundhog’s predictions happen at the end of winter, Boo’s is at the beginning. He’s started building his hibernation den early this year and has already been bulking up for some time – putting on his winter weight earlier than ever as well, he’s been eating 40,000 calories a day since late August.
“Boo seems to think the winter will be a stout one,” says Matt Mosteller, VP of Sales & Resort Experience at Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, “as he [Boo] starts digging in, preparing a deep cave under a tree for his hibernation. Earlier and a bigger hole could mean a colder and deeper snowfall than usual,” added Mosteller.
ABOUT BOO
Boo lives at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in the largest enclosed grizzly bear habitat in the world. Brought to the resort after having been orphaned as a cub, Boo was saved from certain death. Read more about Boo and the Grizzly Bear Interpretive Centre online.
EARLY SNOWSTORMS
Kicking Horse has already had several snowstorms in September! Earlier and bigger than usual hopefully foreshadows an epic ski season full of deep powder!
